QWhat does the demise of Communities.com mean to Palace ?

In late 2000, Communities.com, the owners and producers of the Palace software cloesd their doors. Shortly after that they declared bankruptcy and the Palace software wnet into holding by the court. It is presumed someone will eventually purchase the software from the court and bring Palace back to life under new management.

In the meantime, what does the demise of Communities.com mean to Palace ?

Many people belived the demise of Communities.com spelled the end of all palace servers everywhere and the slow death of Palace. This has not happened, but it definitely has had some effects.

The Palace Directory - The palace directory, operated and maintained on the Communities.com website was a chief means of finding palaces to visit - and a chief means of advertising palaces for those that run them. When this directory went away, the Palace Community at large got together and formed a new directory, operated and maintained by volunteers in the Palace community. You can find this directory at PalaceTools.com.

In order to help the new directory succeed, Chatserve along with most of the other commercial palce hosters, have redirected the directory registration messages that formerly went to the old directory and routed them to the Palace Tools directory site. You need to register your palace with the Palace Tools directory and set up how you want your palace listed. You can find detailed directions on how to do this at the Palace Tools Registration Page

The Palace Viewer (TPV) - The new java based palace client - TPV - was routed through the Communities.com website and is no longer functional. To get around this problem, the palace community has ressurected the older java client known as Instant Palace (IP). This java client does not require support from Communities.com and works fine. If you want to allow java client access to your palace, write to Chatserve Tech Support for assistance.

Server Registration Codes - Registration codes are required to allow a palace server to operate. With the demise of Communities.com, no new server registration codes are available. If you want to start a new palace and cannot obtain a server registration code, write to Chatserve Tech Support for assistance.

Clent Registration Codes - Registration codes are also required to allow the palace client software to operate. Many palace server owners fear that the lack of new client registration codes will reduce the number of palace users because no codes are available for new users. Several persons on the net have made client registration codes available and registration code generators. For legal reasons, Chatserve cannot oficially support these efforts, but the resources are available.
