Palace Command Syntax
The word Syntax refers to the exact formating of a command so that it does what you want it to do.
If you've ever used a DOS command line on a PC or a telnet session on a UNIX system, you know that you have to get the format for the commands exactly right.
The machine cuts you no slack at all.
The same is true in palace commands. You have to get the formating exactly right or you might not get the results you hoped for.
The Bactick - The bactick (sometimes called single quote or apostrophe) is what tells the palace server that what you are typing is supposed to be executed as a command instead of just displayed as chat.
Example: - 'kill is a command - but kill is just a word to be displayed as chat.
Note: - Many keyboards contain two keys that look like a backtick.
One is actually the single quote (located on your keyboard on the same key as the double quote). This key is not the backtick - and will often not work with commands - particularly on a Mac. Sometimes it works - sometimes it dosen't.
The other key is the real backtick (located on the same key as the tilde (~).
Arguments - Many commands have what are referred to as arguments. Arguments are simply options that control specifically what a command does.
Examples:
'paint on - turns ON the painting feature
'paint off - turns OFF the painting feature
The words on and off are arguments to the command 'paint
Default Behavior - Most commands have a default behavior - what they will do if you do not provide an argument. The default behavior for most commands is different depending on what version of the palace server software you are running.
Examples:
On a version 4.4 server, the command 'paint (no argument) - turns OFF the painting feature. The default bahavior for this command under version 4.4 is to assume you meant OFF and turn it off.
On a version 4.5 server, the command 'paint (no argument) - tells you wether the painting feature is currently ON or OFF. The default bahavior for this command under version 4.5 is to tell you the current setting.
The description of each command in the following pages includes the default action for each version.
